Maximize Marine Operations: Top 5 Benefits of Efficient Oil Filtration

Marine engines are the heart of any ship, driving the primary propulsion system that is essential for operations. For marine engineers, unplanned maintenance and breakdowns cause significant issues, often halting the vessel and disrupting service. One key factor that ensures engines run smoothly is maintaining clean lubrication oil. Clean lubrication oil is vital for reducing friction, preventing wear, and cooling engine components, all of which contribute to optimal performance and longevity. In this blog, we will explore the benefits of maintaining clean lubrication oil with centrifugal filters and how they achieve optimal oil filtration.

Centrifugal filters, also known as centrifugal separators or centrifuges, play an essential role in oil quality in marine engines. This type of filtration is better than standard filters, such as paper filters, cartridge filters etc. Centrifugal filtration in comparison significantly enhances operational efficiency by using centrifugal force to separate contaminants from lubrication oil. This leads to several benefits:

1. Efficient Removal of Contaminants

Centrifugal filters are efficient at separation due to their ability to achieve high rotational speeds, measured in Rotations Per Minute (RPM). This creates strong centrifugal force and separation capabilities. Contaminants are forced outward to build up within the centrifugal bowl where it is collected and simply removed during servicing.

2. Improved Engine Performance

Purified lubrication oil is vital in reducing the risk of build-up, wear and corrosion within engine components. Clean oil ensures smoother and more reliable engine operation that results in enhanced combustion efficiency, reducing emissions and improving fuel economy.

3. Extended Maintenance Intervals

By removing abrasive particles from lubrication oil, centrifugal filters reduce wear on engine parts, which prolongs the life of the engine itself and its components, including standard filters. This also has a direct effect on maintenance costs, saving the need for frequent oil changes and part replacements, reducing expenditure.

4. Increased Operational Reliability

Clean lubrication oil allows for consistent engine performance, minimizing the risk of breakdowns and downtime. Increased uptime means organizations can achieve higher productivity, ultimately improving business performance. Centrifugal filters also contribute to the overall safety of marine operations, ensuring the engine runs smoothly and as intended.

5. Environmental Benefits

An efficient oil filtration system reduces the volume of waste oil and contaminated fuel that needs to be disposed of, supporting more environmentally friendly practices. As mentioned previously, improved combustion efficiency reduces the amount of harmful emissions, helping to meet environmental regulations and standards.

Overview: YANMAR 8N21L-GV A client carried out a trial upgrade on an auxiliary engine lubrication system, replacing an existing GF-2 type centrifugal filter with an MP090 unit supplied by IOW Group. The system operates with a 1,200-litre oil sump capacity, using Shell Argina S240 lubricating oil while running on VLSFO 380 CST fuel. The objective of the trial was to assess whether the MP090 could deliver improved contaminant removal compared with the GF-2, while also introducing remote performance monitoring that had not previously been available
