Overview: YANMAR 8N21L-GV
A client carried out a trial upgrade on an auxiliary engine lubrication system, replacing an existing GF-2 type centrifugal filter with an MP090 unit supplied by IOW Group. The system operates with a 1,200-litre oil sump capacity, using Shell Argina S240 lubricating oil while running on VLSFO 380 CST fuel. The objective of the trial was to assess whether the MP090 could deliver improved contaminant removal compared with the GF-2, while also introducing remote performance monitoring that had not previously been available

The objective of the trial was to assess whether the MP090 could deliver improved contaminant removal compared with the GF-2, while also introducing remote performance monitoring that had not previously been available.

Installation
The MP090 centrifugal filter was installed as a direct replacement for the GF-2 unit, allowing the upgrade to be completed without modification to the existing pipework or system layout. Remote monitoring capability was integrated as part of the installation, providing continuous visibility of operating conditions and separator performance. This enables engineers to track operation in real time, review trends, and identify servicing requirements earlier - functionality that was not possible with the previous centrifuge arrangement.

Results
Both centrifugal oil filters operated under the same conditions over a 200-hour evaluation period. The MP090 formed a sludge cake with a measured thickness of 19mm compared to the existing GF-2 centrifuge, which produced a sludge cake of just 13.1mm over the same duration. From these results, it’s clear that the IOW MP090 is more efficient than the old technology, highlighting the superior performance IOW Group’s centrifugal filters provide.

The trial clearly shows the MP090 provides superior contaminant removal compared to the GF-2 centrifugal filter. By removing a greater volume of contaminants within the same operating period, IOW Group’s centrifugal technology delivers cleaner oil and more consistent separation efficiency. The addition of remote monitoring further enhances operational control, supporting proactive maintenance and improved asset protection. For operators and fleet managers, this translates into greater reliability, reduced wear, reduced maintenance, as well as rapid ROI. Contact IOW Group to begin your free trial.
