What does an apprenticeship with the IOW Group involve?

During your apprenticeship, you’ll usually spend one day a week at college for classes and study time. The remaining four days will be spent on site, building practical knowledge and skills through work-based learning under the supervision of experienced peers.

As an apprentice, you’ll be treated the same as any other member of staff. You’ll be allocated a proper role within your team where you’ll be expected to carry out your role’s requirements, whether it's producing parts using specialist equipment or assembling and testing our products before shipping them to customers.

You’ll be an integral member of the team from day one, not a spare part, and we’ll make sure to provide you with all the support and guidance you need to thrive in your new role.

Who can apply?

We accept apprentices from the age of 16 onwards. You must have a minimum of grade 5 (high C, low B) in GCSEs for English, Math, and Science, and you must be able to commute easily to our office in Ryde on the Isle of Wight.

How many years does an apprenticeship last?

Typically, apprenticeship schemes with the IOW Group last three years. This can vary depending on your preferences, the qualification you’re working towards, and the nature of your role, ranging from one to three years in total to complete.

What kind of career progression is there afterwards?

Most apprentices who successfully complete their qualification at IOW Group go on to secure full-time positions within the team they undertook their apprenticeship with. Some of our past apprentices have even advanced to the management platform, showcasing our commitment to helping staff grow and reach their full potential.

Why choose an apprenticeship with IOW Group?

At the IOW Group, we aim to help you take your personal and professional skills to new heights. Here are some of the many benefits of joining our team!

  • Depending on your qualifications and courses, you can earn a level two or three qualification through completing an apprenticeship with us. We currently have three apprentices working towards a level three in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering and CNC Machining.

  • Your studies and hands-on work experience will let you develop professional skills related to your area of work, such as critical thinking, problem solving, and the ability to use relevant applications.

  • As we’re a smaller company on the island, there’s a lot more scope for you to get involved in new projects and tasks. You’ll be able to easily draw on the expertise of our knowledgeable staff members, with ample one-on-one time to help you develop quicker and to a higher level.

  • You’ll also learn how to conduct yourself in the work environment, understanding the importance of high-level communication skills (both written and verbal) as well as punctuality and collaboration.

  • We have a regular intake of apprentices, so there are a lot of like-minded individuals who are going down the same career path. This allows you to build good relationships with your peers as well as with other members of staff.

  • Even after you complete your apprenticeship, we'll be there to help you develop further in your career.

You'll enjoy the many benefits of living and working on the Isle of Wight. We're proud to be based in a location full of natural beauty that also serves as a thriving business hub. The island has quick and easy transport links to Southampton, Portsmouth, and other areas along the stunning south coast of Hampshire.
