A Brief History:

Caterpillar Inc. is an American corporation that designs, manufactures, and sells machinery and diesel engines. Caterpillar has a vast product range that serves industries such as construction, maritime, trucking, mining, natural gas compression, energy, and rail. The Caterpillar C280-12 engine is part of the CAT C280 family. They are diesel combustion engines producing 2400-7600 horsepower at 900 RPM. The CAT C280-12 weighs over ten tons, is IMO II compatible, and is often used in locomotives and freight ships. They were first manufactured in 2014.

The Installation

This customer wanted to upgrade their old oil filtration technology. They had three (3) Mann+Hummel FM200-12 centrifugal filters that they wanted to remove and replace with IOW oil centrifuges. The installation was on board a sea-going vessel with a CAT C280-12 engine with a lube oil capacity of 240 gallons (1091 liters). The best product choice for this engine, fueled by marine diesel oil (MDO), was three (3) IOW MP200 centrifugal oil filters and CentriClean SCU0002 monitors for each filter.

Upgrade your centrifuge filtration!

The IOW MP200 centrifugal oil filters were installed on existing mounts with the CentriClean SCU0002 monitoring units fitted nearby for easy access to the live data. The short and long-term benefits of remote monitoring units are great. Our customers can be confident the centrifuges are running optimally with the ability to set alarms. The CentriClean SCU0002 monitoring unit can display live data on the front screen, so operators know instantly that the centrifuge filter is running correctly. Utilizing this new monitoring technology means fewer resources are used but with better results!

The Results:

The IOW Group MP200 centrifugal oil filters collectively removed 38mm of soot from the CAT C280-12 engine's lube oil after a run time of 506 hours. Removing soot contributes significantly to enhancing engine reliability and yields remarkable benefits in terms of engine efficiency, fuel economy, and emissions reduction. Furthermore, it plays a pivotal role in minimizing long-term maintenance costs.

Better Technology = Increased Separation Efficiency = Better Results!

The Products:

The IOW MP200 Centrifuge Filter

The IOW MP200 centrifugal oil filter is designed for an engine oil sump capacity of 35-175 liters (9-46 gallons). The IOW centrifugal oil filters turn faster than any existing centrifuge filters on the market. This generates higher centrifugal force, providing a more efficient separation process. The higher centrifugal speeds separate the solid contaminants from the lube oil more effectively than any other centrifugal oil filter on the market.

Higher Centrifugal Force = Better Separation Efficiency

The IOW centrifuge bowl is completely sealed, avoiding cross-contamination between cleaned and dirty oil. The IOW MP200 centrifuge filter has a central disc stack, which significantly improves the efficiency of the separation process. Combining these unique features makes the IOW centrifuge filter 150% more efficient than any other currently available product. All these features of an IOW centrifuge filter are patent-protected and, therefore, only available through the IOW Group.

The CentriClean SCU0002 Remote Monitoring Unit

The CentriClean SCU0002 is designed to monitor the performance of the centrifuge. It will continuously display the current centrifugal oil filter RPMs during its regular operation and monitor run hours. Alarms can be set to alert the operator when run hours have been completed or if the performance of the IOW centrifuge reduces. Having alarm systems in place saves on precious man-hours, helps utilize fewer resources, and ensures your filtration system is working to the best of its ability.

Better Technology = Better Engine Reliability

The CentriClean SCU0002 monitoring unit is Modbus compatible with existing systems. The unit requires 12-24 volts DC to operate and is provided via the power terminal block. The centrifuge filter sensor is a 3-wire device and requires +5 volt supply.

Overview: YANMAR 8N21L-GV A client carried out a trial upgrade on an auxiliary engine lubrication system, replacing an existing GF-2 type centrifugal filter with an MP090 unit supplied by IOW Group. The system operates with a 1,200-litre oil sump capacity, using Shell Argina S240 lubricating oil while running on VLSFO 380 CST fuel. The objective of the trial was to assess whether the MP090 could deliver improved contaminant removal compared with the GF-2, while also introducing remote performance monitoring that had not previously been available

For today’s marine superintendent, filtration is no longer a background consideration. It’s a direct lever on reliability, cost control, and vessel availability. With tighter schedules, leaner crews, and rising pressure to reduce operating costs, the margin for error has all but disappeared. Every unplanned stop, every premature oil change, every maintenance-heavy system chips away at performance and profit. That’s where smarter filtration earns its place on board.
